Quality Manager Position Description

Major Function

To design, implement, maintain and update a total quality system dedicated to conformance to customer requirements, and the enhancement of company image and reputation in the marketplace as a top-quality manufacturer.

Major Responsibilities

The Quality Manager’s responsibilities fall within four primary categories encompassing quality systems,

Inspection, analysis, and corrective action.

Collectively, these assure compliance with customer requirements and drive continuous improvement.

The Quality Manager directs the activities of the Quality Department, ensuring that the appropriate skills, equipment, and training are in place to support company quality initiatives and objectives.

Directly responsible for coaching, mentoring, teaching, training, motivating, and guiding employees involved in the department processes. Employees may be direct reports to this manager or others involved in processes reporting to other functional leadership.

Review and verify team member training levels and competence for required work. Review training levels and competencies for required work with team members and develop training plans to address any deficiencies and review progress towards training and development goals.

Quality Systems

Design, develop, implement, communicate and coordinate compliance to inspection programs administered by Quality department personnel or production operators.

Prepare for and coordinate external audits of the quality systems. From ISO, to other appropriate levels. A working knowledge of IATF 16949 is required.

Establish programs such as SPC to identify nonconformances and implement corrections and improvements.

Develop long-range quality plans, strategies, and tactics in support of continuous improvement, cost reduction, and equipment, facility, and staffing upgrades utilizing multi-functional teams as appropriate.

Establish internal controls to assure defect avoidance rather than defect identification.

Design, develop, administer and coordinate a supplier quality audit and certification program aimed toward the identification of unacceptable plating, heat treating, mixed parts, and foreign material provided by suppliers.

Implement and coordinate practices required by customers including problem resolution, obtainment of temporary deviations, and establishment of acceptance criteria.

Represent the company in customer audits, reviews, and specification releases or alterations.

Audit & Inspection Systems

Develop and implement final audit of production parts prior to shipment to customers to assure complete compliance with dimensional, packaging, appearance, and documentation requirements.

Coordinate, develop, and maintain CMM programs, inspection programs, and all information required to support customer projects.

Develop and implement periodic audits of outside service providers including heat treat and plating, as well as raw material suppliers to assure vendor performance to specifications.

Establish capability studies required to verify the accuracy of systems including gage R&R, process potential, SPC & CPK analysis, and long-term capability studies in accord with customer requirements and internal Quality Assurance procedures and practices.

Develop and implement periodic audits of outside service providers including heat treat and plating, as well as raw material suppliers to assure vendor performance to specifications.

Corrective Action Systems

Conduct internal quality surveys to identify improvement opportunities and implement revised processes.

Coordinate the response to customer requests for corrective action including “8-D’s”, follow-up, and the proper disposition of returned parts to the non-conforming area.

Coordinate problem solving on corrective action proposals and develop the necessary leadership of multi-functional problem-solving groups.

Quality Testing & Analysis

Oversee product performance and endurance testing, analysis, and evaluation studies in accordance with customer specifications including first piece and ISIR dimensional layouts and studies.

Select and coordinate outside suppliers of measuring equipment and quality-related software products, and outside services for gauge calibration and analytic laboratory testing including analysis of chemicals and solvents used in the production process and metallurgical testing and analysis of raw materials.

Internal

This is both a supervisory and hands-on position in all aspects of quality at Lap Tech.

This position is also part of the Lap Tech management team.

Production: Review quality practices and procedures and assist in the implementation of corrections and improvements, provide resources relative to the interpretation of quality criteria and the judgment of acceptable and unacceptable product.

Engineering: Coordination of compliance with customer requirements for documentation, dimensional accuracy, material certifications, and appearance criteria.

Production Control: Coordination of disposition of product as either non-conforming or conforming

Customer Service: Coordination disposition of product and corrective action status.

Customers: Coordinate requirements, deviations, returned material, and/or corrective measures required, and provide guidance on first article submissions (PPAP).

Scope & Impact

Scope: Position includes the responsibility for the development, implementation, audit, and coordination of programs designed to assure the production of parts and associated documentation or testing in strict conformance to the requirements of our customers. The position further includes responsibility for implementing systems to improve the predictability of new product launch process through quality techniques such as FMEA’s, error proofing, flow diagrams control plans, and measurement system evaluation.

Impact: Effective performance of the duties and responsibilities has a direct, and potentially sizable, effect on the profitability of the company relative to the ability to attract and retain new customers, while cost-effectively conforming to our customer requirements. The ability of the company to attract new customers having stringent quality requirements is directly related to the effectiveness of the incumbent.

Functional Guidance

Engineering: Provide expertise in the design of programs which meet customer specifications and assure conformance to requirements.

Customer Service: Provide information relative to rejects, returned parts, deviations received and realism of customer requirements.

Manufacturing: Provide expertise regarding the development of quality control and engineering procedures and practices, quality improvement and training, and process improvement recommendations.
